Page 1 The ladies’ Association of Squirrel Island held their annual meeting at the Chapel August 27th 1884 Mrs. Congressman Dingley in the chair. The reports of the Secretary and the Treasurer were read and accepted. The Association voted to be governed by the following Constitution and By Laws. Preamble To encourage sociability among the residents of Squirrel Island and for raising funds necessary to assist in carrying out our ideal for this purpose – even the ladies here assembled desire its purpose to organize our associations and agree to be governed by the following Constitution ad By Laws. Constitution Article 1st – Name The name of this association shall be known as the Social Squirrels. Article 2nd – Officers The association shall elect by ballot at its annual meeting on the last day in August of each year the following officers President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, an Executive committee of these, and Page 2 an Entertainment Committee of music [nine (?)], each of whom shall hold her office for one year and until her successor is chosen and signified her acceptance. Article 3rd – Amendments No alteration or amendment of this Constitution or By-Laws shall be made except notice of such alteration or amendment by given at a previous meeting. By-Laws Article 1st President The President shall preside at will meetings of this association for business, sign all draft upon the Treasurer for any money to be used for any purpose for which the association and any of its meeting have authorized, and to see that its officers perform their duties. Article 2nd Vice President In the absence of the President or upon her resignation, her duties shall be performed by the Vice President. Page 3 Article 3rd Secretary The Secretary shall keep the record of the proceedings of all meetings., shall issue all motions, shall keep a list of the members of the association, shall be prepared at any time to refer to any first record at the request of any member present, shall sign in communications [not right word!? Cossmention ?? ] with the President all drafts upon the Treasurer for money appropriated by the Association. A report of the years schedule be given at the annual meeting Article 4th Treasurer The Treasurer shall receive and hold all funds belonging to the Association and pay out such only upon an order signed by the President and Secretary, shall collect all membership fess and other money due the association, shall keep an account of the same in a book belonging to the association, which book shall be open at all times to the inspection of any member of the association. A report of the financial Page 4 condition of the Association shall be made at the annual meeting. Article 5th Executive Committee The Executive Committee shall have an active voice in the appropriateness of the funds of the Association and shall be consulted by the Entertainment Committee in all their plans for raising money in any way whatsoever. Article 6th Quorum At all meeting of the Association seven members shall constitute a quorum for the transaction of business. Article 7th Membership Any lady resident or visitor may become a member by paying twenty five cents annually into the treasury. Article 8th Entertainment The number of entertainments for each season shall not exceed three to be given at such dates as many be designated by a majority of the members present Page 5 at the first meeting of each season. Article 9th The President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer shall constitute and Executive Committee with the authority to take immediate action in the name of the Association in cases of emergency. Page 29 Squirrel Island, July 16, 1888 The Social Squirrels held their first meeting at the chapel Monday P.M. The President, Mrs Dingley in the chair. The report of the Secretary was read and accepted. The committee for lamps reported and all bills paid. It was voted that the Comm. Procure four more lamps. Voted that Mr Lickett have charge of the lamps and the sum of $10.00 be paid him for the season. Voted that Mr Lickett procure the oil & can. Voted to adjourn Mrs Wallace White sec Page 30 is blank Page 31 Squirrel Island Aug. 23 1888 The Social Squirrels held their annual meeting at the chapel Thursday afternoon. The President Mrs Dingley in the chair. The reports of the Secretary and Treasurer were read and accepted. Voted that a note of thanks be extended to Mrs J.L. Wood for the work she had so faithfully done for the Social Squirrels. This was accepted and thanks received from Mrs. Wood for the note. Voted that the following officiers be appointed for the following year. President Mrs Adrome Dingley Vice “ “ Martin Chase Treasurer “ Emerson Secretary “ W.H. White The President then called for votes for Entertainment Committee and the following names were proposed and accepted. First Entertainment Mrs Adamis Page 32 Miss Annie White Second Mrs. Fred Chase “ Katie Andrews The President then announced the business of the meeting, namely the repairing of the Bowling Alley Hall or the building of a new Hall for a place of Amusement. Remarks were made by Mrs Hall, Mrs Brooks and Mrs. Pearsonsmith. A few wirds frin tigers Squirrels. It wsa finally voted that the chair appoint a Comm of three to consult with the Directors and a meeting of the social Squirrels be called for Monday when the results would be announced Mrs. May Mrs Wood were appointed to do this Mrs J White Voted to adjourn to meet Monday Aug 27 Mrs Wallace H. A special meeting of the “Social Squirrels” was held at the Chapel. The President Mrs Dingley being absent. The Vice President Mrs Maschal Chase presided. Mrs j.c. Wood was called upon to announce the business of the meeting – weather the ladies should take the bowling alley hall to make into an amusement hall, this ??? to shingle and finish the piazza. Remarks were made by Mrs fuller, brooks, J.D.White, Whitehouse and others. Mrs Brooks moved that one? Accept the proposition . Accepted unnanomusly. Mrs Emerson moved that three be appointed to take charge of the whole matter . Acciplied The following names were accepted Mrs May Chairmand “ J D White “ J C Wood Votes that a third entertainment committee be chosen: Miss Mary White Florence Brooks Martha Ingreham Page 36 Voted that the executive comm. Open the hall with a reception Voted that Mrs J.C. Wood be appointed to obtain a piano for the season. Voted that the price of admittance to Entertainments be fifteen cents for adults and ten cents for children under twelve. Hometallent Voted that more be asked when talent was engaged from away. The price left to the Comm. To be decided. Voted that thanks be extended to Mrs. Adams for use of Piano for the season. Voted that Mrs Reynolds order Mr. Moons to take in the lamps this fall and har? in Orders to light the first day of July 1889. Upon suggestion of Mrs. Rebecca White and by vote of the ladies the name of the “Social Squirrels” was changed to “Ladies Improvement Society” Voted to adjourn Mrs. Wallace White Sec. Mrs Mastiri Chase V.P. in the chaie, the President Mrs. Nelson Dingley being absent. The secretaries’s report was read and accepted. The officers for the next yaer were then chosen. Mrs Hovel President Mrs N. Chase. V. “ Mrs. Guierson, Treasurer Mrs. W.H.White Secretary A note from Mr. A.H.Davenport was read by Mrs. Frye acknowledging a note of thanks from the society for his improvements. Voted that a nominating Comm be chosen by the President to appoint entertainment committee. The following persons were chosen. Page 41 Mrs Wood Mrs. May Mrs. Mi?tell The entertainment comm consisting of the following persons were appointed. 1st Mrs Mitell Mrs. Adams Mrs. White 2ed Mrs Wood Mrs. Reade Mrs Cardiiaec 3d Mrs. L Chase Mrs Andrews Miss Annie White. Voted to thank Mrs Adams for her work in raising funds for the treasury. A report of the ?heiting comm was read. Mrs. Emerson proposed that a lady be chosen to attend the meeting of the Page 42 Island Association also the Chapel Assoc. to ascertain whether they would refund money expended in, blinds, lamps, etc. Mrs. Wood was chosen. Voted that the building Comm. Should eccure plans and proposals as many as they thought proper and commence work as soon as possible. Voted that the list of contributors be passed to Mrs. Emerson that the money might be collected when needed. Voted that the sec’y write to absent stockholders for contributions. Voted that a petition be drawn that the Society be organized as a legal Corporation under the laws of the State and that Sec’y was instructed to take the necessary actions to that end. Voted to adjourn Mrs Wallace White Sec‘y.. Page 43 To Wallace H. White, a justice of the Peace, in the city of Lewiston, county of Androscoggin and the State of Maine. We the undersigned whose residences are dated(?) opposite our respective signatures hereby associate ourselves together for the purpose of organizing a corporation to be located at Squirrel Island in the county of Lincoln and State of Maine, for the purposes of Social, Literary, educational and musical improvement and for the purpose of erecting and maintaining a building or hall at said Squirrel Island devoted to the purposes afore said and also to aid and assist in improving and developing said Squirrel Island as a place of resort for such purposes and to be known as the “Ladies Improvement Association” of Squirel Island. And we here by request that you issue your warrant directed to one of us regarding her to call a meeting of such associated at such a time and place as Page 89 A meeting was called August 14th - 1892 for the purpose of amending the By-law in regard to admission fee. Only six persons being present - no action was taken. Mrs. Clifford Belcher was made an active member by unanimous consent. Motion to adjourn - H. E. White - clerk. |
